GMA to attend NAM in Egypt
Malacañang announced on Thursday that President Arroyo will fly to Egypt to attend the 15th Non-Aligned Movement Meeting from July 15 to 16 in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh.
The Palace also said the Chief Executive will check out today at the Asian Medical Center in Muntinlupa City following a successful medical checkup, although a Manila Bulletin source in that hospital said the President underwent removal and replacement of breast silicone implants.
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said Mrs. Arroyo, who arrived on Monday from a 13-day visit to five countries, will join world leaders from 117 other NAM countries in the Egypt conference that will tackle Islamic issues and global development.
“President Arroyo can’t miss out on a gathering of world leaders,” he said. The Philippines is currently sitting as NAM vice president for Asia. However, Remonde said he was not sure if Mrs. Arroyo would make side trips to other countries.
During the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Coordinating Bureau in Havana from April 27 to 30, Mrs. Arroyo raised the issues of interfaith dialogue and cooperation, piracy in the high seas off Somalia, enhanced regional efforts in tackling the global economic crisis as illustrated by the Chang Mai
Initiative of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and promotion of the rights of migrant workers.
NAM, which traces its origins to the historic Afro-Asian Summit held in Bandung, Indonesia in 1955, is the developing world’s leading political caucus in the UN system. The NAM member-countries represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations’ members that comprise 55 percent of the world population.
Malacañang also expressed its readiness to open its financial book, particularly the details of President Arroyo’s travel expenses abroad and said the Philippine government has benefited “one hundred times over” what it spent for the President’s trips.
Remonde noted the need for the Chief Executive’s foreign visits, saying they are aimed at strengthening the Philippines’ bilateral relations with other nations, particularly at this time of global economic upheaval.
Meanwhile, a Palace official announced that President Arroyo has ended her two-day self-imposed quarantine “with a clean bill of health,” and is expected to resume public engagements “in a few days.”
The informant, who requested anonymity since the source was not authorized to speak about the matter, said the President was scheduled to undergo augmentation mammoplasty at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center.
In addition, a cyst or lump in the groin area was also scheduled to be removed by surgery, said the hospital source.
A biopsy was also done on her breast, the source said. This does not mean that the President was ill. This was part of regular medical procedures, the source added.
The President cancelled the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday in preparation for her quarantine. She checked in at the hospital on Wednesday.
Security measures have been tightened at the hospital during the President’s confinement. All persons, whether visitors or employees, are subjected to intense inspection, a source said.
Remonde said President Arroyo yesterday checked out of the hospital at around 2 p.m. in the pink of health.
“She underwent certain checkups while on quarantine and all the results were okay. She has returned to Malacañang,” he said in a text message.
He also denied rumors that the President had some silicone removed from her body.
