The Break of Dawn

In with the Old

Now, more than ever, the number of people who like film is growing.

Of Gifts

Wherever you go, I shall go
Wherever you live, so shall I live
Your people will be my people
And your God will be
my God, too.
Wherever you die, I shall die
And there shall I be buried
beside you
We will live together forever
And our love will be the gift
of our lives.

When Things Stay the Same

Fortunately, there have been things which have changed little over the years. Pentax is one of these.

God’s Hand

When things go wrong, people often ask “Why?” and seldom get answers.

Still Getting it Straight

It really works best to do some research first or at least have someone who did along when you try to buy yourself a tripod.

Getting it Straight

Many people like throwing this phrase around: Let’s get one thing straight.

Saying Goodbye

Parents seem to be, at times, the greatest ally while at times your greatest foes.

Little Blessings

Many people have continued to desire the best and newest photography equipment with some keeping tabs on rumors regarding what model will be coming out soon.

It’s all up to you

Thinking on what to write about today, the idea of limitations came to mind but then again, we’ve been talking about that a lot already and they’re used as the classic excuse for not getting something done.

Coming Close

Photography-related magazines seem to have the longest staying power. Those that date all the way back from the 1980s will, if you read through them and apply what they say about the craft and not get too caught up in the technology bit, still be very relevant.

But wait, there’s more

Undoubtedly, you’ve been tempted at least once to watch these TV shopping channels. One of the more amusing tricks they have of enticing people to buy is, after giving all the advantages of getting their product, they tell you what else you can get as “extras” just by buying their stuff.

Getting Down to the Basics

We’re into the 72nd installment of this column and it seems that we’ve not gotten into the basics of photography yet.

Big yet again

Since we started talking about full-frame bodies last week, we might as well start talking about the newest full-frame player around – the Sony Alpha A900.

When size matters

Most people won’t remember it but one of the smallest film formats available for consumer use was the disc format made by Kodak in the ‘80s.

Stand your ground

March is the month of graduation, and many of us have once again become “family photographers.” Some schools are more accommodating when it comes to this while others are more, well, let’s just say “strict.”

Going Fast

Photography comes to us in varied ways, and some are fortunate than others. I first got into photography using a Yashica J3. That’s way old for most people who now know nothing but Canon and Nikon. Some people may not realize it but some of the first interchangeable lens SLRs had screw mounts. This allowed manufacturers to interchange lenses but because of the engineering limitations, the bayonet mount that everybody is now so familiar with came to be.

When things are alien

Many college people often discover there are subjects that they never knew they had to take. It’s just that for some schools, it is taken for granted that you will take these subjects as soon as you decide to give that school your high school records and plunk down your parents’ hard-earned money.

Scale and wide-angle lenses

A very popular focal length being sold now for many camera systems is the 18-200. For most people, this is very much what will be used anyway. There’s a good reach and the wide-angle is quite adequate.

On the road again

It’s been a while since this trip to Thailand was made, around five months ago. Bangkok is a truly amazing place, so full of history and culture that you can’t help but be amazed by it. If your only experience with Bangkok and Thailand in general has been movies like The King and I, you’re really, really in need of the real thing.

A greater whole

Marriage is one of the most important stages in anyone’s life. It’s such a privilege to be part of how that begins, how two people dedicate themselves to each other and recognizing many of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, they look at one another and promise to be half of a much greater whole.

Having a bit of fun

We’ve always said that photography should be fun and, once in a while, you do get lucky enough not only to have a bit of fun and do it in the presence of beauty.

KISS

Many students are taught an acronym that is meant to help them become terse in their attempts at prose. KISS simply means "Keep it simple, stupid" while some prudes would like to believe that it’s "Keep it simple, sister." While the latter version is more acceptable in so-called polite society, the former version is much closer to the point. Making things simple can be a sign of true genius while making things more complicated is sometimes but an exercise in egotism.

It’s all in the details

The regular travel photo has a lot of elements in it – sometimes, too much. There are times, though, that there is just too little in it. So, what to do? While photos can, of course, exist on their own, there is such a thing as a photo essay where you’re given much more leeway as to what you’d want to say. Many photographers (both those who are really good and those who aren’t but have access to so much money) come up with coffee-table books around this same idea. You don’t just take one photo and contend that it says everything. It can say a lot about something, definitely, but there are always more sides to an issue even if it is just a weekend vacation.

Back Home

We’ve said goodbye to Malaysia for now and here’s a little policy my wife and I have made for ourselves: whenever we go out of the country, we have to make sure that we go to another part of the Philippines to make sure that our appreciation for that other country is balanced by our increased fascination over the country that God has given us for our home.
