To encourage global exchanges of television programs focusing on peace, security, economic and social development, and the enhancement of cultural exchanges, World Television Day is celebrated on November 21 of each year. The event is an opportunity to focus on enhancing the utility of television that plays an effective role in disseminating information and knowledge, and serves as a powerful tool for reflecting and shaping human conditions and aspirations.

Television is one of the most influential forces of our time and has become an inescapable part of modern culture. Through television, we are able to receive news, sports, entertainment, education, culture, weather, information, commercials, even music.

In the crowded television environment, there are high-quality TV programs for both children and adults. Shared viewing gives family members of all ages and opportunity to spend time together. Many TV programs explore controversial or sensitive issues which can make it easier for parents and their children to discuss them. TV enables people to share experiences with others, teaches children important values and life lessons, and develops critical thinking.

According to researchers, viewers feel an instant sense of relaxation when they start to watch television. However, with the recent increase in satellite and digital specialty channels, we now have access to an abundance of both good-quality and inappropriate television content. If in its early years, television was looked upon with awe as a marvelous tool for communication, at present, the convenience it has to offer is not without a cost.

Television has great potential that has not been realized, and if the excesses are brought under control, television could become an even better devise that will benefit society, with the free exchange of ideas and knowledge achieved through high-quality television programming.
