BEEP: The new bus-jeep

A new public transport vehicle is about to take to the streets and it may just modernize the jeepney population – and clean the air of Metro Manila too.
This is the BEEP which its manufacturers – Mitsubishi Motors Philippines and Almazora Motors Corporation, a leading bus body maker – have collaborated as a viable alternative to the jeepneys crawling and zooming around the country.
“MMPC aims to fulfill its role as an automotive industry mover in the Philippine economy and society through the introduction of the BEEP,” Masahiko Ueki, president and CEO of MMPC said. “The auto industry should not only care about selling brand-new vehicles but also take a lead role in improving the mass transport system. "
"And since no assembler has really pursued to modernize the public transportation, MMPC collaborated with Almazora to come up with a better solution for mass transportation.” Mr. Ueki added.
The jeepney population is around 400,000 units, 70,000 of which are in Metro Manila, according to figures from the Department of Transportation and Communications.
The BEEP is bigger than the jeepney and smaller than the bus, which responds to the present requirements of both vehicles. It has a high ceiling to allow eight standing passengers and a seating capacity for 26. It has also ceiling-mounted air-con vents to make the ride more comfortable.
Inspired by European Gruau Microbus, this new jeepney’s body is locally designed and manufactured by Almazora Motors, while the chassis is supplied by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines using brand-new FUSO Canter light duty truck which complies with Philippine emission and safety regulations.
Other key features of the BEEP are ergonomically-placed steering wheel, shift knob and center instrument panel controls; spacious interior and large door openings that offers passengers ease and comfort; high roof and wrap around clear window styling.
The BEEP is also seen as a response to an increase in the number of commuters who are expected to shift to public transport because of the rising fuel prices. The new vehicle’s comfortable interior and ride will attract these new commuters who are willing to pay for higher fares for better service.
The initial price of BEEP is about P1.6 million. Though it is double the price of a brand-new AUV unit, the new vehicle has double revenue potential since it has more seating capacity. In addition, since the BEEP utilizes entirely new truck chassis, vehicle financing is also possible thru the banks.
The BEEP will be on sale by the end of November.
