Zhou Mi of Hong Kong is not the world No. 1 shuttler for nothing.

The top-seeded Zhou, calling on all her experience, averted what could have been a career catastrophe when she battled back from a first set loss to scrape past fourth pick Jiang Yanjiao of China, 13-21, 21-14, 22-20, and storm into the singles finals of the Bingo Bonanza Philippine Grand Prix Gold Saturday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Zhou, the Athens Olympics bronze medalist, made up for the lackluster first set by asserting her might in the next two to arrange a final showdown with Chinese qualifier Wang Xin, who easily clobbered compatriot Wang Shixian, 21-13, 21-6.

Jing actually had the 30-year-old Zhou reeling in the final set when she led 16-20, but Zhou found her rhythm back just in time to claim the win.

Former world junior champion and seventh seed Chen Long of China also reached the men’s finals via a hard-earned 21-14, 10-21, 21-14 victory over teammate Zhou Wenlong.

Chen’s victory set him up a date with eighth pick Hu Yun of Hong Kong, a 17-21, 21-14, 21-13 survivor over Chinese Du Pengyu.

It was an all-Chinese finals duel in the mixed doubles as unseeded pairs Chen Zhiben and Zhang Jinkang and Zhang Nang and Lu Lu disposed of their tough rivals to reach the championship round.

Chen and Zhang survived a second- set scare against Muhammad Rijal and Debby Susanto of Indonesia, 21-15, 22-20, while Zhang and Lu had an easier time disposing of their fellow Chinese Qui Zihan and Deng Yuting, 21-13, 21-12.

Chen and Zhang quickly displayed their resolve in the opening set but Rijal and Susanto came back with more firepower to lead 9-2 in the second.

The Chinese duo fought back with their smart drop shots to grab the lead, 17-14, only to allow the Indonesians to knot the score at 18-all once more.

Chen and Zhang, however, kept their composure as Susanto’s smash sailed out the court to seal the victory.

The tandem of Zhang and Lu, on the other hand, needed only 33 minutes to oust their rivals and earn their first finals appearance in this Grade 4 event.

Zhang and Lu, who stunned top seeds Y. Wiratama and Chan Hoi Wah of Hong Kong, 18-21, 25-23, 21-17, used a pivotal 5-0 run in the final stretch to pull away from a slim16-12 lead en route to the win.
